Ways of ensuring Garbage Odor Control
Usually, the summer heat brings on a strong foul smelling whiff from your trash can. It could smell like rotten fish or fruit or anything sour and strong. However, the good news is that though it may smell like fish or rotten fruit, there are a few easy ways to ensure garbage odor control:
- Fill up the kitchen sink with a cup if bleaching powder and warm water. When the sink is full, pull off the plug and switch on the garbage disposal. Drain the sink while the disposal system is still functioning.
- Look for the hose and take it to the gutter and let it run for a while.
- Check that the black rubber cover fits well in the disposal system. When it doesn’t, garbage bits get under the flaps and an odor emanates. If you need to, clean the rubber cover. Remove it and clean the dirt off it with a brush and warm water and soap. If it cannot be removed, clean each flap with soap water and an old fine brush.
- To check garbage odor control, halve a lemon and place one half with a fistful of baking soda into the garbage disposal system. Switch on the cold water tap and the disposal system and allow the unit to clean itself internally with the lemon and baking soda mix.
- Use cleansers available in the stores for a clean and fresh perfume.
- Light incense sticks for a few hours for a fresh perfume, particularly if you’re having guests over. Alternatively, you can light candles too which will not only serve as decoration but also remove unnecessary and embarrassing odors.
- Wash your sink as often as you can, particularly if you wash your dishes in the sink and allow food particles to go down the drain. Keep your kitchen area clean by pouring dish washing liquid or a teaspoon of bleaching powder down the drain while you keep the tap running.
- Sprinkle some baking soda into your garbage disposal system and pour half a cup of vinegar over it. Let it remain for an hour and then switch on the cold water faucet while keeping the disposal system running. When you find the smell of vinegar disappearing, the odor too will have disappeared.
- You can also ensure garbage odor control by filling up an ice tray with vinegar and water and freeze it. Now, run cold water into your disposal system and add the ice cubes to it. The vinegar does the job of deodorizing the disposal system while the ice hones its blades. You can do this every alternate week to keep your unit staying fresh and clean. Ensure you don’t use this ice tray for anything else.
Preventing garbage odor control:
- Check that your garbage bags don’t leak before you put them into the trash can.
- Add baking soda to your trash bags to blank out the odors.
- If you have any liquids like gravy in your trash, put it in a plastic bag and tie it tightly and then place it in your trash bags.
- Once the trash can is empty, air it out overnight.
- Use bleach solution to wash your unit once a month.
